The MSU Astronomy group was honored to have three new graduate students this past Fall: Jack Schulte, Sona Chitchyan, and Sierra Casten. We talk about their journeys to astrophysics and plans for graduate school at MSU.

Jessie Miller is a recent graduate of Michigan State’s Astronomy program and received the Thomas Osgood Outstanding Senior Award this past spring semester. Her research involves multiwavelength observations of neutron stars and finding unique radiation signatures in black holes.

MSU astronomy undergraduates Wasundara Athukoralalage, Lauren McDermott, Miranda Pikus, and Jennifer Rodriguez, were all awarded the Lawrence W. Hantel Endowed Fellowship in recognition of their participation in long-term research programs at MSU.

MSU Astrophysics PhD Candidate Carl Fields has received both academic and popular recognition for his research, including the Price Prize from the Center for Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, the RPF Distinguish Postdoctoral Fellowship from Los Alamos National Lab, and being named to the Forbes 30 Under 30: Science list.

MSU Astronomy boasts ties to three recent recipients of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP): two current PhD students, Brandon Barker and Teresa Panurach, and one former post-baccalaureate researcher, Megan Davis. We interviewed Panurach, Davis, and Barker about what the NSF GRFP means to them.
